Birthday embroidery designs

Birthday cakes with candles, cupcakes, wrapped gifts, party crowns and big numbers: these birthday embroidery designs are made for birthday shirts, keepsake pillows and gifts. Each one comes as a free or premium download in PES, DST, JEF, EXP and VP3. Plan the layout before you hoop: a cake with a name below it and the age beside it needs more room than the cake on its own.

The classic birthday shirt combines three parts: a cake or a gift, the new age and a name. Take the digits from the number designs and create the name in the monogram maker, then stitch everything in one hooping if it fits.

Birthday shirts are mostly knits, so hoop them with a no-show mesh cut-away and sew with a ballpoint needle. On a first birthday bodysuit, iron a soft cover over the back so the stitching does not scratch. A 95 mm cake fits a toddler tee with room for the age below it, while a 125 mm version suits an adult shirt.

These birthday embroidery designs are not only for kids: a gift box on a tote bag, a cupcake on a cloth napkin for the birthday seat at dinner, or a cake on a pillow with the date all make grown-up gifts. For balloons and party hats, see the party and balloon designs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I center a name under a birthday cake design?

Stitch the cake first and leave the fabric hooped. Load the name, move it down with your machine's positioning keys, and use the trace or trial function to check the gap before sewing. A space of about 1 cm (0.4 in) between the cake and the letters looks balanced on most shirts.

What can I embroider for an adult's birthday?

For milestone birthdays such as a 30th, 50th or 70th, the age in large digits under a small cake works well on a sweatshirt. Quieter gifts include a tote bag with a gift box motif, cloth napkins for the birthday dinner, or a pillow with the name and the date.
