Nature & weather embroidery designs

Smiling suns, crescent moons, rain clouds, rainbows, snowy peaks, ocean waves and campfires: these nature and weather embroidery designs bring the outdoors to tees, quilts and canvas bags. Many of them are free, and you can download each one as a PES, DST, JEF, EXP or VP3 file.

One tip before you start: hoop knits drum-tight without stretching them, or the outline can drift away from the fills once the fabric relaxes.

Sky, weather and landscapes in thread

Our nature and weather embroidery designs are grouped by what you see outdoors. Look up and you find the sun, moon and star designs: smiling suns, crescent moons and starry night motifs. Rain clouds, raindrops, lightning and umbrellas sit with the cloud and weather designs, and boho rainbows or rainbows with clouds and hearts fill the rainbow designs.

Further out, peaks, pine-covered hills and sunsets make up the mountain and landscape designs. Waves, palm islands, shells and sandcastles belong to the beach and ocean designs, while tents, campfires and compasses wait in the camping designs. Every motif is drawn in flat thread colors with a dark satin outline and a few small highlights, usually three to eight colors in total.

Sizes and placement

Small, simple shapes work almost anywhere. A single cloud, a crescent moon or a tent at 70 mm (2.8 in) fits a shirt pocket, a baby bodysuit or the corner of a napkin, while layered scenes like a sunset behind mountains or a palm island in the waves show their details best at 125 mm (4.9 in) on a tote bag or a cushion, which takes a 5x7 hoop.

Wide motifs such as mountain ranges and waves sit well across a chest or along the front of a cap. Check the sewing field of your cap frame before you choose.

Fabrics and stabilizers for outdoor favorites

Most nature designs end up on a handful of items, and each one needs its own backing:

  • T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts: a cut-away stabilizer and a ballpoint needle, with a no-show poly mesh on light or thin knits so nothing shows through.
  • Canvas totes, denim and backpacks: a tear-away under stiff canvas, a cut-away under softer weaves, and a 75/11 sharp needle.
  • Fleece blankets and beach towels: a water-soluble topping so the stitches stay on top of the pile, with a tear-away or cut-away below.
  • Quilt blocks: embroider the cotton block before you piece the quilt.

For towels and kids' clothes that are washed often, 40 wt polyester thread is the safe choice because it is colorfast and bleach-resistant. Rayon gives more sheen on cushions and framed hoops.

Gift ideas

Nature motifs make personal gifts because they connect to a place or a memory: a mountain for a hiker, a wave for someone who lives by the sea, a moon and stars for a new baby, a campfire for the friend who plans every trip.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have embroidery designs of a specific mountain or national park?

Our mountain and landscape designs show generic peaks, hills and sunsets rather than real, named places. For a particular summit or park, describe it to the AI design generator and download the result in the usual machine formats. If you already have your own drawing or SVG, the image to embroidery tool can turn that into a stitch file.

Can I change the thread colors of a sunset or sky design?

Yes. Every design page shows the thread chart in sewing order, with the color names and the stitches per color, so you can plan a swap before you start, such as a pink and lavender dusk instead of orange. Note that DST files store no colors: your machine shows default colors, and you change threads by following the chart.

Which nature designs work for a baby nursery?

Soft, simple sky motifs are the usual choice: a sleepy moon, a single cloud, a small rainbow or a smiling sun. Stitch them on a cushion, a blanket corner or a piece of linen framed in a hoop for the wall. More motifs for a baby's room are collected in the nursery designs.

Where are the snowflakes and fall leaves?

Motifs tied to one time of year have their own section. Snowflakes, mittens, acorns, falling leaves and spring blossoms are collected in the seasonal designs, while this category keeps the motifs you can stitch all year: sky, weather, landscapes, beaches and camping.

Can I sell items made with these nature designs?

Free designs come with a personal-use license, so they are fine for gifts and your own home. To sell stitched tees, bags or cushions you need a plan that includes a commercial license. The license page explains exactly what each license allows.
