Sun, moon & star embroidery designs

Sleepy crescent moons, suns with friendly faces and night skies full of stars: these sun, moon and star embroidery designs are made for nursery decor, pajamas and everyday tees. Many are free, with files for Brother and Baby Lock (PES), Janome (JEF) and every other common machine. Tip: a lemon or cream moon stands out clearly on navy fabric, so a dark blue sleep sack becomes a small night sky.

Our sun, moon and star embroidery designs are about the sky itself: suns with rays and smiling faces, crescent and half moons, and celestial motifs that put the sun, the moon and a few stars together. If you only need a plain five-point star, the star and shape designs are quicker to stitch. Saturn and Earth live with the planet designs, and constellations with the zodiac sign designs.

For a baby, the 70 mm (2.8 in) moon fits the chest of a sleep sack or a pajama pocket; back the knit with a cut-away and add a soft fusible cover inside so the stitches never rub. A sun with long rays needs room to shine, so take the 125 mm size for a cushion or a tote bag.

Sun and moon motifs also work as a pair. A sun on one pillowcase and a moon on the other is a simple gift for a couple, and a row of small moons along the hem of a curtain turns a bedroom window into a quiet night scene.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stitch a moon design on black or navy fabric?

Yes, and dark fabric suits night-sky motifs. On navy the dark satin outline still shows; on black it blends in, so the shape reads through its fills alone. If you want a visible edge on black, sew the outline step in charcoal or gray instead. The thread chart on the design page shows where the outline falls in the sewing order.

How do I embroider a pillowcase without sewing it shut?

Hoop only the top layer. Slide the outer hoop ring, with the stabilizer, inside the pillowcase through its open end, then press the inner ring in through the top layer alone. Smooth the back layer away from the hoop and check underneath before each start. Place the design near the open end, where it shows on a made bed.
