Star & shape embroidery designs

Chunky stars, lightning bolts and simple geometric shapes: these star and shape embroidery designs are quick stitch-outs with clean satin edges. Free star files download as PES for Brother, JEF for Janome or DST for almost any other machine. A scatter of stars over a kid's sweatshirt adds up fast, so hoop each spot separately and mark every center point before you start.

Stars and basic shapes are the most flexible motifs in the library. A row of small stars along a hem, a lightning bolt on a hoodie sleeve or one big star on a tote bag all start from the same kind of file, just in a different size and color. The points of our stars are slightly rounded, so the satin outline turns each corner cleanly instead of piling up thread.

On knits, use cut-away stabilizer, because a solid star pulls the fabric more than an open line drawing does. On cotton, canvas and denim, a medium tear-away is enough for one or two shapes. To make a star your own, keep the thread chart as a guide and swap yellow for metallic gold, a school color or a neon shade.

Frequently asked questions

How do I embroider a row of stars that lines up evenly?

Draw a straight guide line with a removable marker and mark the center of each star on it at equal distances. Hoop each star with its mark on the hoop's center point, then use your machine's trace or outline function to check the position before stitching.

Can I stitch a star design with metallic thread?

Yes, simple stars are a good match for metallic thread because they have few sharp turns. Use a metallic or topstitch needle, a regular bobbin thread and a slower machine speed. If the thread still breaks, slow down further and check that it unwinds freely from the spool.
