What a converter does, and what it can’t

A converter rewrites the same stitches in another machine format. It doesn’t redigitize the design, so density, underlay and sewing order stay exactly as they were, and so does the size. What changes is what each format can store: DST, EXP and U01 carry no thread colours, JEF and PEC only know their brand’s fixed palette, and VP3 keeps colour values and thread names. Trims are written the way each format expects; DST, for example, has no trim command and uses a short burst of jumps instead. Our formats guide explains every format in detail.

Which format does my machine need?

Use the format your machine’s manual lists first. These are the native formats of the big brands; many machines read a few others too.

Popular conversions

Each of these pages explains what that conversion keeps and loses, which machines read the result and what to do if it doesn’t sew right.

Before you stitch a converted file

  • Open it in the free viewer to check the size, the stitch count and the smallest hoop it fits.
  • Converting from DST, EXP or U01 can’t bring colours back. Keep the design’s colour sheet next to the file.
  • Unzip a ZIP before copying files to your machine’s USB stick: machines can’t look inside ZIP files. The transfer guide covers sticks, folders and file names.
  • A design that is too big for your hoop needs a smaller version, not a conversion. Scaling a stitch file sews badly; see why.

Questions about converting embroidery files

Is the converter really free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no limit on stitches below 500,000. We only cap how many files one connection can convert per hour, to keep the tool fast for everyone.

Do you keep my files?

No. Your file is read in memory, converted and sent back to you; neither the upload nor the result is written to our disks.

Does converting change the size or the stitch quality?

No. The stitches, their order and the size stay the same. The only exception is stitch length: a format with a shorter maximum stitch (DST allows 12.1 mm) gets the rare longer stitch split in two.

Can you convert EMB or ART files?

No. EMB (Wilcom) and ART (BERNINA software) are design files, not machine files, and no free tool reads them reliably. Open the file in the software that made it and export a machine format such as EXP, PES or DST.

Can I convert to HUS or VIP?

We can read HUS, but no free tool writes HUS or VIP. Current Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines read VP3, so convert to VP3 instead.
