Convert PES to JEF
Move a Brother or Baby Lock design to a Janome or Elna machine. The stitches and trims convert cleanly, the colours are matched to Janome’s thread palette, and the JEF records which Janome hoop the design needs.

Your file is read in memory and discarded right away. We never store it.
What carries over
Stitches, colour changes and trims convert one to one; JEF has real trim commands, and our converter writes them. The size and the sewing order stay exactly as they were.
What doesn’t
PES colours, including any thread names in the PES thread table, become numbers in Janome’s fixed thread palette: each colour turns into the nearest Janome thread, so close shades can merge. Brother’s thumbnails and the PES hoop setting don’t carry over.
Which machines read JEF
Janome calls JEF the default format for all Janome and Elna embroidery machines, so a plain JEF is the safe choice even on models that also take Janome’s newer JEF+ or JPX files.
Size, hoops and stitch length
The converter writes the smallest standard Janome hoop the design fits into the file: 50 × 50, 126 × 110, 140 × 200 or 200 × 200 mm. A design larger than your biggest Janome hoop won’t open, and it needs a smaller version rather than a conversion. JEF limits a single stitch to 12.7 mm, so the rare longer PES stitch is split in two.
If the JEF file doesn’t sew right
- Colours look different: the nearest Janome thread isn’t always a close match. Sew the colours you want; the file only marks where the machine stops.
- The design isn’t found on the USB stick: unzip the file first and copy the .jef itself; most machines need a FAT32-formatted stick. The transfer guide has the details.
PES to JEF: questions
Can a Janome machine read PES?
Janome’s own format lists centre on JEF, with DST on some models; PES isn’t among them. Converting to JEF is the reliable route.
Will the JEF keep my thread brand names?
No. JEF stores colours only as positions in Janome’s palette. Keep the PES or the design’s colour sheet if you buy thread by catalogue number.
