Heart embroidery designs

Solid hearts, hearts pierced by an arrow and hearts filled with dots, stripes or flowers: these heart embroidery designs fit spots where a big motif would not, from a shirt pocket to a baby's sleeve. Many hearts are free, and all come as PES, DST, JEF, EXP or VP3 files.

Hearts are symmetric, so a crooked one shows at once: mark a vertical center line on the fabric and line it up with the marks on your hoop.

Small hearts are favorites for tight spots: a shirt cuff, the corner of a pocket, a baby's sleeve. Larger patterned hearts suit throw pillows, quilt blocks and tote bags, and a row of three hearts in different colors looks cheerful along the hem of a kitchen towel. The 70 mm heart is the right pick for a pocket or a sleeve; take the 125 mm version for a pillow front.

On a ready-made pocket, the needle would stitch the pocket shut, so unpick it, embroider it flat and sew it back, or place the heart just above it. Sleeves need a check of your machine's sewing field, and knit tees want a cut-away with a ballpoint needle.

These heart embroidery designs cover the symbol itself in all its styles. For Valentine's Day motifs, see the Valentine's Day designs; stars, lightning bolts and simple geometric shapes are in the star and shape designs.

Frequently asked questions

Are heart embroidery designs good for beginners?

Yes. A heart has one clear outline, few color changes and a symmetric shape, so you can see right away if the fabric shifted. Start on a stable cotton, such as a tote bag or a kitchen towel, with a tear-away stabilizer, then move on to T-shirts once your hooping is steady.

How do I embroider a heart on a T-shirt?

Try the shirt on and mark the spot with a pin, usually on the left chest. Hoop a no-show mesh cut-away with the shirt, or float the shirt on hooped adhesive stabilizer, and sew with a ballpoint needle. Afterward, trim the stabilizer to about 1 cm (0.4 in) around the design, and for a child's shirt iron a soft cover over the back.
