Planet embroidery designs

Saturn with its rings, a smiling Earth, the whole solar system in a row and a few shooting stars: these planet embroidery designs bring outer space to nurseries, kids' rooms and grown-up space fans. Free and premium planets download as PES, JEF, DST, EXP or VP3 files, ready for Brother, Janome, Bernina and Pfaff machines. Ringed planets are wider than they are tall, so measure the width of your spot before you choose a size.

Planets are round, bright and simple, which makes these planet embroidery designs an easy start for a space-themed nursery. Stitch a single Saturn in the middle of a quilt block, line up several planets along the hem of a curtain or a play mat, or put a small Earth on the pocket of a pajama top.

Quilting cotton needs only a medium tear-away, which you remove before you layer and quilt the block, so it stays soft. The 125 mm Saturn suits a throw pillow for a kid's room, and the 70 mm planets suit bibs and baby bodysuits.

For a full space mission, pair the planets with astronauts and rockets, or scatter moons and stars between them on a baby quilt. Want softer colors for a nursery? Sew the planets in blush, sky blue, mint and lemon instead of the brighter threads on the chart.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a planet design show up on navy or black fabric?

Choose a planet with bright fills, and consider changing the outline color. The outline is sewn in a dark thread that blends into navy and black, so sew that color stop in silver, white or light gray instead. The thread chart on each design page lists the colors in sewing order, with the outline after the fills.

How do I embroider a planet on a baby bodysuit?

Float it: hoop a no-show mesh cut-away, spray it lightly with temporary adhesive, and press only the front of the bodysuit onto it, keeping the back and the snaps away from the needle. Use a ballpoint needle and the small size. After stitching, trim the mesh and iron a soft fusible cover over the back so the stitches do not touch the baby's skin.
