Cloud & weather embroidery designs

Rain clouds, falling raindrops, lightning bolts and open umbrellas: these cloud and weather embroidery designs suit raincoats, nursery decor and kids' tees. Start with the free files, or download any design in DST, PES, JEF, VP3 or XXX for Singer machines. Tip: coated rain fabric keeps every needle hole, so test on a scrap first and never unpick on the coat itself.

Cloud and weather embroidery designs use simple, friendly shapes: a puffy cloud with raindrops, a bolt of lightning, an open umbrella. They read clearly from across a room, which makes them a good fit for nursery cushions, curtains and framed hoops. Pair a cloud with one of the rainbow designs for a sun-after-rain theme, and look in the winter designs when you need snowflakes.

For a raincoat, choose a small cloud or umbrella and place it on the chest or a sleeve. If the coat is lined, open a short seam in the lining so you can hoop the outer shell alone, then stitch with a sharp 75/11 needle over a tear-away or cut-away. Clips or tape instead of pins keep the coating free of extra holes.

On kids' tees and bucket hats, the 70 mm cloud is plenty. The 95 mm size still fits a 4x4 hoop and looks right on a cushion or a toddler's backpack.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a child's name under a cloud design?

Yes. Create the name in our monogram and lettering maker, download it in the same format as the cloud, then combine both on your machine's screen or stitch the name in a second hooping. Leave a gap of about the height of one letter between the cloud and the name so the two parts read as one design.

Which thread should I use on raincoats and outdoor gear?

Use 40 wt polyester thread. It is colorfast and bleach-resistant, so it keeps its color through wet days and frequent washing, while rayon has more sheen but suits items that are washed gently. Wind a 60 to 90 wt bobbin thread and choose a sharp needle for tightly woven or coated rain fabrics.
