Nursery embroidery designs

Nursery embroidery designs with sleepy moons, stars, soft clouds and drowsy animals for crib quilts, cushions and wall hoops. You will find free and premium designs in PES, DST, JEF, EXP and VP3.

Pick fabric and thread from one soft palette, for example sage, cream and sky blue, so the quilt, the cushion and the wall hoop match.

These motifs set a quiet bedtime mood: crescent moons with closed eyes, chunky stars, puffy clouds and animals curled up asleep, in soft shades such as sage, sky blue, blush, lavender and cream. They work as a set, so you can repeat one moon on a quilt, a cushion and a hoop on the wall.

Quilt blocks and cushion fronts are usually quilting cotton or linen, and a tear-away stabilizer is enough for most of these nursery embroidery designs; choose a light cut-away for extra support. Many safe-sleep guidelines advise keeping quilts and pillows out of a young baby's crib, so use them as wall or chair decor until the child is older.

The 125 mm size fills a quilt block or a 6-inch display hoop, and 70 mm suits a storage basket label. For more night-sky motifs, browse the sun, moon and star designs and the cloud designs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn a nursery design into wall hoop art?

Stitch the design on linen or cotton with a tear-away stabilizer, remove the stabilizer and press the piece face down on a towel. Center it in a wooden display hoop slightly larger than the design and tighten the screw. Trim the fabric at the back to about an inch (2.5 cm) and glue or lace it to the inner ring.

Which stabilizer should I use for a minky baby blanket?

Use a cut-away below and a water-soluble topping on top. Minky has a deep, slippery pile that swallows outlines and shifts when clamped, so hoop the cut-away alone, spray it with temporary adhesive and float the minky on it. Designs with open fills stay softer on a blanket than dense ones.
