These school embroidery designs are made for back-to-school: a pencil on a pencil case, a bus on a book bag, an apple on a lunch bag, a backpack on the first-day shirt. Most school gear is nylon, canvas or polyester twill. Canvas book bags take a tear-away or cut-away depending on density, while nylon and coated fabrics need a cut-away to stop puckers, and because needle holes stay visible on coated fabric, test the design on a scrap first.

If you sew pencil cases and lunch bags yourself, embroider the outer panel before assembly, because a finished bag with a lining is hard to hoop. A 70 mm pencil fits a polo shirt chest or a pencil case; take 125 mm for the flap of a book bag.

A name keeps a bag from getting lost, and you can create one with the monogram maker. For end-of-year gifts, browse the teacher designs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I embroider a name on a backpack?

Hoop the front pocket alone if it opens wide or zips off; otherwise float the backpack on a hooped sticky stabilizer and stitch through one layer only. Keep the name short, use a sharp needle on nylon, and check your machine's sewing field before you place lettering on a curved panel.

When should I start back-to-school embroidery?

About a month before school starts where you live. That leaves time to buy blank bags, stitch names and wash new clothes before the first day. School years begin at different times in different countries, so count back from your local start date.
