Wanderlust & travel gear embroidery designs

Suitcases, passports, luggage tags, folded maps and globes: these wanderlust & travel gear embroidery designs are for weekend bags, toiletry bags, passport covers and gifts for someone about to set off on a trip. Some are free and some premium, and every one downloads in PES, JEF, VP3, EXP or DST for the machine you own. Nylon bags pucker easily, so back them with a cut-away and use a fresh sharp needle.

This page is about the journey and the gear rather than the destination. For famous towers, city skylines and adventure badges, browse the travel and places designs, and planes have their own page under airplane designs.

Canvas weekend bags and toiletry bags are easiest to embroider before they are sewn: stitch the front panel flat, with a tear-away on canvas and a cut-away on nylon. Finished bags can be floated on hooped adhesive stabilizer, as long as the motif stays clear of zippers and seams. Travel neck pillows in minky or fleece need a water-soluble topping so the stitches do not sink.

These wanderlust and travel gear embroidery designs make good send-off gifts: a passport cover for a student going abroad, a toiletry bag for a honeymoon, a weekend bag for a new retiree. Add initials with the monogram maker so the bag is easy to spot on the baggage carousel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I embroider on a nylon or polyester duffel bag?

Back the fabric with a cut-away stabilizer (a fusible one keeps nylon from shifting), use a sharp 75/11 needle and stitch at a moderate speed. If you cannot hoop the bag, float it on hooped adhesive stabilizer and clip the rest of the bag out of the way. Keep the design off seams, zippers and padded areas.

What size travel design fits a passport cover or a luggage tag?

The 70 mm size: a passport is about 125 x 88 mm, so a 70 mm suitcase or globe sits centered on the front of a fabric cover with room to spare. Luggage tags vary, so measure the front panel and leave at least 1 cm (0.4 in) on every side. Stitch the panel before you sew the cover or tag together.
