Hanukkah embroidery designs

Hanukkah embroidery designs with menorahs, dreidels and Stars of David for challah covers, napkins and gift bags. Many are free to download, in PES, JEF, VP3, DST, EXP and other formats.

Silver thread on navy or royal blue fabric gives a festive look; if you choose a metallic silver, slow the machine down and use a metallic needle.

The set centers on the symbols of the eight nights of Hanukkah: the menorah that is lit each night, the dreidel spun in games for chocolate coins, and the Star of David. They are drawn as clear, simple shapes with the same dark outline as the rest of the library, so they read well on napkins and gift tags.

Typical projects are challah covers, napkins, table runners, gift bags for gelt and children's T-shirts. Linen and cotton covers take a tear-away stabilizer; for velvet, float the fabric on a hooped cut-away and lay a water-soluble topping on top so the pile does not swallow the stitches. Add a name to each gift bag with the lettering maker.

A 95 mm Star of David fits a small gift bag, and a challah cover usually has room for the 125 mm menorah. For the rest of the season, pair these Hanukkah embroidery designs with snowflakes from the winter designs.

Frequently asked questions

When is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar and lasts eight nights. Because that calendar is lunisolar, the dates on the everyday calendar change every year, usually falling between late November and late December. Look up this year's dates before you plan gifts or orders.

Which thread colors suit Hanukkah designs?

Blue and white are the colors most people connect with Hanukkah, often with silver or gold for the candle flames and the menorah. If a design uses other shades, simply sew those parts in the thread you prefer; the thread chart shows where each color comes in the sewing order.
