Christmas embroidery designs

Christmas embroidery designs for stockings, sweatshirts, ornaments and kitchen towels: Santa faces, reindeer, snowmen, Christmas trees, gingerbread men and a Nordic gnome with a star on his hat. Plenty of them are free, and all download in PES, JEF, DST, VP3 and the other main formats.

Embroider a stocking cuff while the fabric is still flat, before the stocking is sewn together: it is much easier to hoop.

The Christmas set covers the classic figures: a jolly Santa face with a curly beard, a reindeer, a snowman, a decorated tree, a gingerbread man with gumdrop buttons and a gnome in a tall red hat. Red, green, white and gold lead the palette, and the dark satin outline keeps each shape clear on kitchen towels, napkins and cushion covers.

For holiday sweatshirts and kids' pajamas, hoop a cut-away stabilizer and switch to a ballpoint needle. On a red or green sweatshirt, a large white area such as Santa's beard can let the fabric color peek through, and a water-soluble topping helps it look solid. On velvet or minky stockings, the topping also stops the pile from swallowing the outline.

A gift tag or ornament takes the 70 mm version of these Christmas embroidery designs; the 125 mm size fills a stocking cuff or the front of a cushion. More bearded helpers are waiting in the gnome designs, and winter designs stay useful through January and February.

Frequently asked questions

What stabilizer should I use for Christmas sweatshirts?

Use a cut-away stabilizer, because sweatshirt fabric is a knit that stretches. A medium cut-away supports fuller designs, while a no-show mesh is enough on thinner tops. Hoop the sweatshirt without stretching it, stitch with a ballpoint needle, and add a water-soluble topping if the surface is fuzzy.

When should I start Christmas embroidery projects?

October is a good month to begin if you are making gifts or filling orders. That leaves time to test thread colors, add names, sew stockings together and wash and press everything before December gets busy. If you sell at holiday markets in November, start in September.

Which Christmas designs work best on kitchen towels?

Single motifs with open fills, such as a Santa face, a Christmas tree or a gingerbread man, sit well a few inches above the hem. Hoop flour-sack towels firmly on a light tear-away or a mesh cut-away, and add a water-soluble topping on terry. For towels the rest of the year, browse the kitchen designs.
