Gnome embroidery designs

Gnome embroidery designs with tall floppy hats, round noses and long fluffy beards, from a Christmas gnome with a star on the tip of his hat to garden gnomes for spring. Many of these gnomes are free, and each comes in PES, DST, JEF, VP3, XXX and other formats.

The beard is a large white fill: on terry kitchen towels and fleece, add a water-soluble topping so it does not sink into the pile.

In Nordic homes the bearded Christmas gnome is a classic, and it has become popular well beyond Scandinavia. These gnome embroidery designs keep the traditional shape: a cone hat pulled down over the eyes, a round nose and a beard that hides everything else, with little boots peeking out.

Christmas gnomes suit stockings, table runners, kitchen towels and gift bags; garden gnomes fit aprons, tote bags and seed-swap pouches in spring. Felt, linen and cotton take a tear-away stabilizer, and polyester thread keeps the red hats bright through hot washes.

A 70 mm gnome fits an ornament or a gift tag; take 125 mm for a stocking or a cushion. For more holiday companions, see the Christmas designs and the gardening designs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a gnome, a tomte and a nisse?

They are the same kind of small bearded figure from Nordic folklore. Tomte is the Swedish name and nisse the Norwegian and Danish one, while in Finland he is called tonttu. In those countries he is a common part of Christmas decor, usually shown with a tall red hat and a long white beard, which is the look our Christmas gnome follows.

Can I stitch a gnome on a kitchen towel?

Yes. Gnomes are tall and narrow, so they fit the lower half of a kitchen towel, centered a few inches above the hem. Use a mesh cut-away or a thin tear-away on flour-sack towels and hoop them firmly, because thin cotton shifts easily.
