Gardening embroidery designs

Watering cans, seed packets, birdhouses, flower pots, trowels and garden gloves: these gardening embroidery designs are for garden aprons, farmers' market totes, sun hats and gifts for the person who grows everything. Several are free, and all of them come as PES, DST, JEF, EXP and VP3 downloads. Canvas aprons and totes are stable, so a tear-away stabilizer and a sharp needle are all they need.

These gardening embroidery designs show the work of the garden rather than the blooms alone: a watering can with drops, a stack of clay pots, a seed packet, a birdhouse on a post. For the flowers themselves, see flower and plant designs; the harvest is in vegetable designs, and bees and butterflies are in bugs and insects.

Garden flags are a favorite project. They hang in the sun, so sew them with polyester thread, which fades less than rayon outdoors. Burlap flags have a loose weave: back them with a cut-away and lay a water-soluble topping on top, so the fill does not sink between the threads.

On a garden apron, stitch the pocket piece before you sew it on, or place the motif above the pocket so the pocket stays usable. Planting season starts at different times in each region, so stitch gardening gifts in late winter to have them ready for the first seeds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I embroider gardening gloves?

On cotton or canvas gloves, yes: the flat cuff is the spot. Gloves are small and curved, so float the cuff on a hooped adhesive tear-away, choose the smallest size and keep the fingers well away from the needle. Rubber-coated gloves are not worth trying, since the coating tears and the motif will not lie flat.

What is a good embroidered gift for a gardener?

A canvas garden apron with a watering can on the bib, a market tote with a seed packet, or a set of small drawstring bags for saved seeds, each with a flower pot. Add initials or a name with the monogram maker, and finish the gift in time for the start of planting season in your area.
