Mermaid embroidery designs

Mermaid embroidery designs with shimmering tails, seashells and little sea princesses for beach towels, swim bags and tees. Plenty are free, with PES, DST, JEF, EXP and VP3 files for every design.

Choose polyester thread for anything that goes to the pool: it keeps its color in chlorinated water far better than rayon.

Tails and shells come in sea colors such as turquoise, teal, lavender and coral, with the dark outline marking each fin. A mermaid tail on its own is a simple, recognizable motif, which makes it a quick stitch for a batch of party favors.

These mermaid embroidery designs follow the summer: beach towels, swim bags, pool cover-ups, kids' tees and pillowcases for a mermaid-themed bedroom. On knit tees and cover-ups use a cut-away and a ballpoint needle; mesh swim bags are hard to stitch, so embroider a cotton pocket and sew it on.

A 70 mm shell or tail fits the pocket of a cover-up; take 125 mm for the corner of a beach towel. For more ocean motifs, see the sea life designs and the beach designs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I embroider a mermaid on a beach towel?

Choose a flat spot on the woven border band or about 4 inches (10 cm) above the hem. Hoop a tear-away or cut-away below, lay a water-soluble topping on the terry and stitch with polyester thread. Afterwards, tear or trim the stabilizer and rinse the topping out.

Can I use holographic thread for mermaid scales?

Yes, but keep it to small accents such as a few scales or the outline of the tail. Holographic thread is stiffer and less hard-wearing than polyester, so on beach towels and swimwear, which meet salt water, chlorine and sunscreen, sew the large fills in polyester and save the shine for details.
