Expect small, sweet characters with wings and wands, plus toadstool houses, in soft colors such as lavender, blush and mint. On thin dresses, pick a design with a low stitch count so the embroidery stays soft and drapes with the fabric.

Dresses and cardigans need a stabilizer that matches the fabric: a tear-away or soft cut-away on woven cotton, a no-show mesh cut-away and a ballpoint needle on knits. On thin, light-colored fabric, the mesh also keeps the stabilizer from showing through.

Size these fairy embroidery designs to the spot: the 70 mm version suits a dress pocket or the pocket of a tooth fairy pillow, while a nursery wall hoop or cushion can take 125 mm. Toadstools for a fairy garden theme are in the mushroom designs, and more bedtime motifs are in the nursery designs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a tooth fairy pillow with embroidery?

Cut a small pocket from felt or cotton and embroider a fairy or a wand on it with a tear-away stabilizer. Sew the pocket to the front of a small cushion before you close and stuff it. The tooth goes in the pocket at night, and a note or coin can come back in the same place.

Can I embroider fairy designs on tulle or a tutu?

Tulle is too open to carry a design on its own. Stitch the fairy on the cotton bodice or waistband instead, or embroider a cotton patch and sew it on. If you want to stitch directly on tulle, sandwich it between layers of water-soluble stabilizer and pick a light design with few fills.
