Mushroom embroidery designs

Mushroom embroidery designs with red-capped fly agarics, spotted toadstools and cottagecore clusters, drawn in house with a dark satin outline and bright white dots. Toadstools come free or premium, in PES, JEF, VP3, EXP and DST, and each design page shows how many trims they need.

For the cottagecore look, stitch them on natural linen or oatmeal cotton with a tear-away behind.

These mushroom embroidery designs cover the storybook side of the forest floor: the classic red cap with white dots, smaller toadstools and cottagecore clusters of several mushrooms. The white dots are separate small details that sew last, on top of the red fill, so they stay bright and round. On a canvas tote, the red cap is the densest part, so a medium tear-away or a light cut-away keeps the canvas from puckering around it.

A single 70 mm toadstool suits the chest of a child's T-shirt, while the 125 mm cluster fills a canvas tote bag or a cushion. Stitch them on aprons, fall napkins, kitchen towels and tees for mushroom foragers.

Toadstools and gnomes belong together, so see the gnome designs. For fall, add foxes and hedgehogs from the woodland animals, and frogs from the reptile and amphibian designs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep the white dots bright on a red mushroom cap?

The dots sew last, on top of the red fill, so they cover it with white thread. On towels, fleece and other fluffy fabrics, add a water-soluble topping so the dots do not sink, and choose polyester white, which stays white through bleach. If red still shows through, check that you are using a standard 40 wt thread and not a thinner one.

Are mushroom designs good for Christmas and New Year?

Yes. In parts of Europe the red-and-white toadstool is a traditional good-luck symbol at Christmas and New Year, so it suits napkins, gift bags and kitchen towels for the holidays. Pair it with gnomes for a Nordic-style set, and see the New Year designs for clocks and fireworks.
