Embroidery alphabets & fonts

Complete letter sets from A to Z, in script and block styles, with each letter as its own file: these embroidery alphabets and fonts let you spell names, initials and labels letter by letter. Free sets come in the file types home machines read, from PES (Brother, Baby Lock) and JEF (Janome) to VP3 (Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff) and DST. For a straight line of text, mark one baseline on the fabric and align every letter to it.

An alphabet set gives you single letter files that you arrange yourself, on the editing screen of your embroidery machine or in embroidery software. That suits short words, names on kids' bags and initials on napkins, and you can reuse the same set for every gift. If you would rather type the text and receive one finished file, use the monogram maker.

The letters are sewn as satin columns, so choose the style by the space and the fabric. Script letters need room: once capitals shrink under roughly 7 mm, their thin connecting strokes and small loops fill in. Block letters stay readable at smaller sizes and on textured fabric, while scripts look best on smooth cotton, linen and twill.

Space the letters by eye rather than with equal gaps, because round letters such as O and C need to sit closer together than straight ones such as H and I. For finished initials with frames and flourishes, browse the ready-made monogram designs, and for ages and dates the number designs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an embroidery font and a computer font?

A computer font such as TTF or OTF only describes letter outlines for screens and printers. An embroidery machine needs stitch files, with satin columns, underlay and density already worked out. The alphabets here are stitch files, one per letter, ready to load on your machine.

How do I combine single letters into a name on my machine?

Open the first letter, add the next ones on the editing screen and move each into place; many machines and editing programs allow this. Align the bottoms of all letters on one baseline, check the total width against your hoop and save the combined design before you stitch.

Do script embroidery alphabets work on towels?

They can, if the letters are large enough. Terry loops swallow thin strokes, so use a water-soluble topping, stay well above the minimum cap height and avoid very fine scripts with hairline connections. For hand towels and washcloths, bold block letters are the safer choice.
