Word & quote embroidery designs

Short words, kind sayings and fun phrases drawn as word art: these word and quote embroidery designs are made for kitchen towels, tote bags, throw pillows and tees. Free sayings and premium word art both download as PES, JEF, VP3, EXP and DST. Before you stitch a long phrase, check that its smallest letters are still at least 6 to 7 mm tall.

Each design here is a complete piece of word art: the lettering is laid out with small accents, such as a heart, a star or a sprig of leaves, so the phrase reads as one picture. Short words like Home, Love or Hello stitch quickly and stay legible even at the smallest size. Longer quotes need more height, because the letters shrink as the line gets longer.

Match the phrase to the item: a kitchen saying on a flour-sack dish towel, a motivating line on a gym bag, a cozy word on a throw pillow. These towels are thin, so hoop them firmly over mesh cut-away or a lightweight tear-away. Pillow covers in cotton or linen take a medium tear-away, and sweatshirts always take cut-away.

For your own wording, type it into the monogram maker and add a small motif from the library. Cozy sayings for the house are also in the home designs, and kitchen phrases sit well next to the kitchen designs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the wording of a quote design?

Not inside the file, because each quote is digitized as finished word art and a stitch file holds no editable text. To use your own words, create the text in the monogram maker and combine it with a small motif on your machine. Keep the phrase short so the letters stay readable.

Which stabilizer should I use for a quote on a sweatshirt?

Use a cut-away stabilizer, because sweatshirt knit stretches and lettering shows every distortion. Fuse or spray it to the back, hoop without pulling the fabric, and lay water-soluble film on top when the face of the sweatshirt is brushed or fluffy. Afterward, tear off the extra film and dab away the rest with water for clean letter edges.
