Train embroidery designs here come in two styles: steam trains and locomotives drawn like the real thing, simplified for thread, and toy railways in bright primary colors that look like wooden toys. Teddy bears and rocking horses to go with them are in the toy designs, and moons, clouds and sleepy animals for the rest of the baby's room in the nursery designs.

The designs also work for grown-up railroad fans: a steam locomotive suits a striped engineer's cap, a tote bag for a model railroad club or a gift for someone who worked on the line for years.

On a bib or a pocket, the 70 mm locomotive is enough. A toddler tee takes the 95 mm steam train, which still fits a 4x4 hoop, and a backpack or a pillowcase has room for the 125 mm toy railway.

Frequently asked questions

Can I embroider a train on a baby bib?

Yes. Choose a compact locomotive, hoop a tear-away with the bib, and lay a water-soluble topping over terry bibs so the wheels stay round. Polyester thread is the safer choice, since bibs are washed often and can meet a little bleach.

Can I stitch a train design on a quilt?

Yes, but stitch the blocks before you assemble the quilt. On a finished quilt, the needle goes through all the layers, and the back of the design shows on the quilt's backing. Embroider each block on cotton with a tear-away, trim it to size and then piece and quilt as usual.
