Summer embroidery designs tend to be small, bright and playful, and they pair easily: a popsicle on a pocket and flip-flops on a beach bag already make a vacation set. Waves and palm islands are in the beach and ocean designs, ice cream cones and cupcakes in the sweets and dessert designs, and surfboards and kayaks in the water sports designs.

A 70 mm popsicle or pair of sunglasses fits a toddler's sun hat, a shirt pocket or a sleeve. The 125 mm sun belongs in the middle of a canvas tote or on a cushion for the porch.

Summer is also the season of camp, pool days and road trips. Stitch a towel or a bag for each child in their favorite color, and they will find their own things at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

What stabilizer should I use on a thin cotton tote bag?

A cut-away. Thin totes carry heavy loads and are rarely ironed flat again, so a tear-away can leave the design puckered after the first trip to the market. Hoop the cut-away with the front layer only and trim it close to the stitches when you are done.

How do I iron a shirt with a summer design on it?

Turn the shirt inside out and press from the back on a folded towel. The towel cushions the stitches, so the fills keep their raised look and do not flatten or turn shiny. A medium heat setting is safe for polyester and rayon thread; avoid pressing a very hot iron straight onto the embroidery.
