Winter sports embroidery designs

Crossed skis, snowboards, ice skates and wooden sleds: these winter sports embroidery designs are for ski bags, fleece jackets, beanies and the blankets in the cabin. Try the free designs first; the files come in JEF, PES, VP3, DST and EXP, among others. Tip: softshell and fleece jackets often have a lining, so check what the needle will go through before you hoop.

These winter sports embroidery designs are about the activity itself: skis, snowboards, skates and sleds. For snowflakes, mittens and hot cocoa, see the winter designs; for snowy peaks without the gear, the mountain and landscape designs.

A ski club, a skating school or a family that goes to the same resort every year can share one motif. Stitch the snowboard on every fleece and add each person's name, or put the skates on a skate bag and the matching tote.

The 70 mm skate fits a beanie cuff or a small skate guard pouch, while the 125 mm snowboard suits the side of a ski bag or the corner of a fleece blanket. Heavy nylon ski bags are hard to hoop, so float the panel on a hooped sticky stabilizer and use a sharp needle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I embroider a ski jacket?

Fleece and softshell jackets work well; test the design on a scrap of similar fabric first. Puffy, insulated jackets are hard, because the filling lifts the fabric and the hoop cannot hold it flat. For those, turn the design into a patch on twill and sew the patch on instead.

What stabilizer works on a fleece jacket?

Use a water-soluble topping over the pile and a cut-away underneath. Fleece is a stretchy knit with a deep pile: the topping keeps the satin outlines crisp, and the cut-away stops the design from distorting as the jacket is worn and washed. Do not press the embroidery with a hot iron, since polyester fleece can melt.
